Today my coworkers and I did some volunteer work at the SF Maritime Museum at Aquatic Park. The weather was good, though windy, but it’s always windy down there. It’s near Fisherman’s Wharf, a part of the city that locals never visit unless they are dragging their tourist friends/family there. Which I have never done because let’s face it, Fisherman’s Wharf is monumentally lame.
Anyway, the Maritime Museum is a ways down from that. My group’s task was to do some light cleaning inside a very old ferry boat. It was the boat that used to carry passengers back and forth to Sausalito before the Golden Gate Bridge was opened. We cleaned up a lot of dust that had accumulated on the walls, windowsills, and wainscoting. After that, our second task was cleaning bird shit off the handrails along the pier. It wasn’t so bad.
I always enjoy volunteer work. It’s a change of pace, you get to meet nice people, and obviously it’s good karma. I also kind of enjoy getting to do some manual labor for a change. I haven’t had a job that required physical exertion in quite a few years. I used to work in a textbook warehouse. It was a very relaxed job environment, and I got into excellent shape.
Anyway, home now. Tonight I will be writing, listening to baseball, and eating mac and cheese.
