+ we went to rainbow grocery. they have the best bulk bin section in the world. I got big bags of rolled oats, basmati rice, shredded coconut, and brown sugar. My only complaint: no golden raisins. I still can’t find them anywhere. My oatmeal is sad.
+ we also got a carton of soymilk. I want to switch over from cow’s milk. It’s a small thing, but I know I should eat less dairy. Also we only use milk for hot/cold cereal, my coffee, and in scrambled eggs. And no, I have no plans to give up butter or cheese or plain yogurt. 😀
+ dinner last night: roasted butternut squash with apples, green salad with organic carrots and french radishes, spaghetti with vegetable red sauce.
+ after dinner, Brian and I sat on the couch together listening to music. He was working on his C++ homework and I was reading Chekov stories.
This morning, it’s raining.
I switched from skim milk to Light Silk Soy Milk. I’ve found most people prefer Silk or 8th Continent to the rest (there are some NASTY soy milks out there). It just makes me feel better for many reasons. I don’t notice much of a difference, and even in baking it doesn’t change the recipes much. I couldn’t give up cheese – no veggie shreds for me lol. Your oatmeal already sounds heavenly, I can’t imagine what golden raisins would do to it hehe 😀
We bought Silk soymilk!
Yeah, most dairy substitutes are rubbish. I can really only tolerate good ol liquid soymilk.
Raisins
I get my golden raisins from Trader Joes…I don’t know how you feel about TJ’s but I find lots of great pantry basics there. And I just LOVE a good handful of raisins or two in my morning oatmeal. (steel cut…I’m a HUGE fan of that particular kind thanks to the oatmeal episode of Good Eats) Dried apple bits work really well too. Doh…I”m hungry for breakfast now and I’m just about to go to bed! Evil breakfast food temptress!
hey there. I assume you are the Jane Hex from the old zine “Hex”. I don’t know if you remember me from those days. I worked at Epicenter blah blah.
anyways, I work at Rainbow and was searching for something online and found your post. It seemed rude not to say hi. I was just thinking about zine folks anyway because an old zine friend just published a book and was visiting while promoting it.
Anyways, you seem to be doing really well. hi.
Hi! My memory is terrible. Well, I am bad with names, better with faces. Yes, it is I, of Hex zine. Which sometimes I forget that people actually read, and then I get embarrassed about some of the things I wrote.
I am doing pretty well. I was actually at Rainbow tonight! Buying honey and almonds and french radishes.
Oh, book publishing. That’s so cool. I am writing a book, but I try not to entertain thoughts of it actually being published. Guess anything is possible. If you check out a few of my entries you’ll see how much I babble on about it.
i will peek at your journal!
ha. I’m the opposite. I can remember names and contexts but walk right by someone and not recognize them. It’s all the years working at Rainbow. Everyone in town looks familiar. I long ago stopped being able to tell if I actually know them.
but I honestly don’t remember whether I bought your zine for the store or just bought copies for myself. I actually don’t know if we ever met irl. I have this vague memory of maybe meeting you at a yo you a go go but that week was kind of a blur.
