I wish I had a talent for interior decor.
I think I am an okay writer, and I can draw convincingly — so I do have some creative talent. But I can’t for the life of me arrange furniture or art or other objects in an aesthetically pleasing way. I am really bad at it. Really. I just hang things randomly on the wall and throw knick knacks and candles on shelves. It’s a mess.
My ex-roomate Heidi was good at this. Ert is good at this. Felicia is good at it, too, even with a tiny apartment.
I am seriously going to need some help when we get a new place.
How do you learn how to decorate?
I used to just cover my walls with show flyers.
ah, the mighty “ghetto latte” –>

You meant to put this in the other entry… right?
People sure are passionate about their milk, huh?
Starbucks makes more money selling milk than they do selling coffee.
oops. yes, so many open browser tabs, so little end of the day attention to detail.
I think that the compromise solution is to ghetto lattes is to b.y.o.m., purchased at fair market value. But whatever, I don’t think it will sink Starbucks either way.
I didn’t even think of that. I would totally do that if I was at work and had some milk in our fridge. But if I’m out an about, carrying milk around in my bag might not be such a good plan.
why I won’t be on top design anytime soon, other than the fact that it was a terrible reality show: my walls are still decorated with show posters. they’re in frames, does that make it better?
Yes, frames are definitely a step in the right direction. I have framed art. Some of it is from Target. 🙁 🙁
Perhaps I need a subscription to a helpful magazine.
ah, who cares. you’re moving soon anyway — enjoy your non-design chic.
We are going to have a killer garage sale this summer.
we are alike in many many ways. my idea of decorating was also show flyers on the walls and free posters from bands. i’m a collector so i have stuff from all of our travels and i love to look at them but then it turns our place into a knick-knacky haven like my mom’s house.
Interesting
I’ve often wondered about people with little interior decorating skill. I find it interesting that you think you lack the skillz, but seem helpless in the face of your own inability to hook it up.
So like, do you go home and sit in your house and think “Wow, that picture is totally ugly/off center/underwhelming right there” or is it more like “Wow, I could do something totally awesome with this room, but I don’t know what so I’m just going to leave it the way it is.” Or is it something else?
Does anyone else agree that you are inept, or are you really not giving yourself credit for your own style?
Re: Interesting
Well I don’t think anyone would tell me to my face that I was inept at decorating.
I think it’s a combo of a few things. I don’t like our apartment, and I never really have. So I am not motivated to improve upon it. I think it would be very different if I OWNED my house.
Also I just don’t know what to do to make things look balanced. I accumulate things without putting enough thought into what to do with them, like candlesticks or little bowls or whatever. I’m just clueless. I think this weekend I am going to get a couple boxes together and start collecting items for the huge garage sale.
Re: Interesting
I accumulate random crapola too… some of it just sits in boxes, which is sad, but every time I move it’s a new opportunity to bring more of it out. Every house has its own personality, so there’s always something that will fit somewhere.
Except the back bedroom. Nothing fits there.
Re: Interesting
True, some people seem to have an innate ability to arrange, but I think its more of a learn skill, or unconscious observation/experience. How about a class in Fung Schwa(sp), mom
Hi Jane, it’s your old pal Chrissa – yes, I still read you sometimes 🙂
I really like Domino magazine. Okay, I love Domino magazine! I admit it. Maybe you would like it, too. They show you all the pretty rooms (contemporary, but not all bleakly modern), but then also give you tips on displaying your knicknacks, choosing and hanging art, and getting inspiration. They had one awesome feature about using the Royal Tenenbaums as inspiration for a decorating scheme.
Hope you’re well!
Hi Chrissa! I have heard of Domino, it’s from the same publisher as Lucky, right? Thanks! I would definitely be into a more modern, cost-conscious decorating zine. cheers 🙂 I will check out an issue. Hope you are well, too!
