So I went downtown today and did some planned shopping. I came away with a couple of cute summer dresses, hooray me. Then I had my makeup done at Laura Mercier. I had never tried this makeup before. It’s actually pretty nice. So naturally I bought some eyeshadow, liner, and a couple brushes.
When I got home I decided to “edit” my makeup drawer. Or, throw a bunch of old stuff away. It felt both good and bad. I hate knowing that I probably spent $12 on some eyeshadow and only used it a few times and that was years ago so it’s probably gone bad and I don’t like the color anymore anyway. I dunno. I am not much of a makeup wearer. Especially stuff like foundation and concealer. I usually just do my eyes and put on some lip gloss.
I have gotten better about it though. No more impulse buys at Sephora, that’s for sure.
Weather report: cool and foggy. I have just finished a bunch of housework. Brian is still at robot show. I think I’m gonna go out for a walk and get a cup of coffee. I don’t think I can bear to watch the end of this stupid Giants game.
When I was a youngen, while browsing the Laura Mercier selection, the SA said that my friend and I just had to sign up for their free make-up application party thing. I guess some special make-up artists were coming. Anyway, we were poor and didn’t even live in the same city so we made sure that there was no charge (remember, young and didn’t realize that nothing is free…especially make-up application) and signed up. We made a special trip back over there, got an AWFUL job done, then they said “well, what do you want to spend your $$ on”. I was flabbergasted.
Of course I now know this is the way it works, but back then I felt really taken advantage of and vowed to never go back to LM. It is worth forgetting my decade-long ban?
Well, first of all I can’t believe they said that to you, I have never been asked that after having my makeup done at any cosmetic counter. Which dept store was it?
I doubt your treatment was specifically a LM thing, sounds like a rude salesperson or makeup artist. Of course you are not obligated to buy anything. They do those events to build interest and awareness in the product, and a natural consequence of it is often a sale. I can’t believe the person you dealt with didn’t realize that bullying actually has such a negative effect that it can turn someone off the brand completely. bad customer service!
Last fall Nordstrom was doing a free facial event and I signed up for that. I got my awesome one-hour facial but I didn’t buy anything that day, just got a bunch of samples. I didn’t get any grief for that at all. Later on after sampling everything, I did come back and buy some stuff, but you know, that was my choice.
There was a minimum purchase obligation of $40 or so. The make-up artist was surprised that I had not been told. After being unhappy with the application, then being forced to buy their products, I was so annoyed by it all I vowed to never go there again. It was in Stonestown…maybe the Macy’s there? Since then, I always ask if I must buy something–most recently I went to MAC and there was a required amount you have to buy.
Buh. I hate make-up anyway!
I was going to ask if it was Macy’s — I HATE Macy’s. They have the worst customer service I’ve seen in any department store.
I have never heard of a purchase requirement for makeup application, but then I only ever buy makeup at Nordstrom and they are known for having the best service.
