It’s supposed to snow all day tomorrow and into Monday. More winter! Fortunately new job won’t start for another week.
Today was the house inspection, meaning we (me, Brian, our agent, and the inspector) spent a couple hours in our future house going through every single room. The inspector also went on the roof (will need to be replaced in a couple years), peeked at the attic (lots of insulation), and went into the crawlspace (eek, evidence of mice). Mice isn’t a shock — it’s a wooded area and mice happen. Luckily we can put that in the inspection report and maybe use it as a bargaining chip. And not to reduce the price of the house, but rather to ask the sellers if maybe they might consider throwing in the lovely butcher block/kitchen island in with the deal. And any other furnishings they don’t want to take with them (the barbecue grill). They are moving overseas against their will (military), so might be willing to pack light. I don’t know. They also might be putting every single thing into storage.
We have two cats, so I don’t worry about mice.
Anyway, aside from the roof thing, the mice thing, and the fact that the furnace should probably be checked out, the house was great. I think the blue room is going to be my office, or, where I keep all my crap. Each of the secondary bedrooms has a full-sized closet! Every room has an outlet on EVERY wall. To me that is amazing, coming from shitty post-war-apartment living, where sometimes there was literally one outlet per room, and half the time they weren’t even grounded sockets.
It’s going to take us a long while to furnish this house. We don’t have much. My bed is almost nine years old, so I want to turn it into the guest bed and buy us a brand new one. Or, a used frame and a new mattress. I want to get some furniture from antique stores. Other stuff from IKEA. I told Brian I am finally allowing myself to subscribe to decorating magazines. He told me he would hook me up with a free digital subscription to Dwell.
We have recently antiqued and found many a good piece… My mother in law reports our prices, `round here are good! I love reading about your future dwelling.
I don’t know so much about it but I know there are lots of antique shops on this side. We should go together some time!!
Have fun at your party tomorrow!
Oh congratulations! I can’t wait to see pictures. It sounds like a great find 🙂
So great that the inspection went well. Our first try at home ownership was dashed when we found major structural issues. Inspections are so important. This place sounds wonderful!
