Today we got coffee downtown with Dave and Mark, then the four of us went to the waterfront on Liberty Bay and watched a bald eagle who was chillin atop a post in the harbor not far away. The entire time, the eagle was being harassed and dive-bombed by some very territorial crows, but he seemed to barely even notice.
At one point, the eagle spread its giant wings and dropped toward the smooth surface of the water, where he plucked a fish with one talon, then circled back around, pursued by two crows. Still ignoring them, the eagle alighted on the same post, and ate the fish. The crows continued to fly around, cawing and diving, just barely missing the eagle’s white feathered head. Finally, the eagle opened its beak and issued several loud whistles, which seemed to hold the crows at bay for a little while.
After about twenty minutes, it took off again and found a much higher place to sit, at the top of the tallest mast of a sailboat.
It was a nice way for our Chicago friends to end their trip — with something they would probably never see back home.
