Today I went to a thrift store in town I’ve been meaning to visit for a while. It was a good one, though I only found a couple things. My best find was this book — a first edition of Valley of the Dolls, which I’ve never read. I paid 25 cents.
After that I drove to the drycleaner to drop off a few things, then headed for my last stop, the furniture store, where I finally ordered our new bed.
It will look like that, except imagine it with a slightly darker finish, with a low footboard, and the inner panes on the headboard will be stained dark brown. It will be beautiful. My favorite thing about this bed is that it will be built by hand by a local furniture maker in Tacoma, instead of mass-produced in a factory in China and then shipped across the Pacific. It will be truly ours, and will last forever.
My brother is visiting next month and we need to put some effort into the guest room. The new bed will go in our room and the spare room will get our old, but very nice and comfy, bed. So I guess the last thing will be a new mattress. I wouldn’t mind getting one a lot like the one I have now, which is nine years old. Just a regular good quality Serta. I know nothing about mattress buying though. Is that whole pillow-top thing even worth it?
mattresses
A nice thing about pillow top mattresses (and you want a pillow top on both sides) is that you can get an extra firm mattress for support and the pillow top makes it much more comfortable for the joints. I’ve had my best luck with Macy sales (like 40% off) they do carry good quality stuff. Just thought of something, I wonder if Consumer Reports has reported on mattresses? Mom
Re: mattresses
Oh yeah, macy’s does have excellent furniture dept. I actually have two friends who got mattresses there. I will check them out! thanks 🙂
i agree about the pillow top. we had a really good one for a long time but left it in alaska when we moved back to the lower 48 and the replacement only had cushioning on one side. not a great idea since you can’t actually flip the mattress. we were broke from the move so that’s about all we could get but we are planning a new bed purchase (hopefully sooner than later) and if i don’t get pillow top (on both sides) we are actually looking at ikea where that is separate so you can flip the mattress and just put the pillow on top.
i’ve said it before, i’ll say it again, i love that bed!
