Just went grocery shopping, spent around $40. This included locally grown zucchini, a half-flat of the best blueberries (local also) I have tasted in a very long while (two thirds of which went right into the freezer), some organic fingerling potatoes, a couple of red bell peppers, and finally, a whole free-range chicken, on sale for $1.19/lb.
I roasted a whole chicken for Thanksgiving last year; it was remarkable easy and, naturally, better tasting than most other chicken products/parts one normally buys. Also, a lot cheaper. Dunno why more people don’t do it this way. But then I also don’t know why everyone doesn’t bring their own bags to the grocery store either. You bring your keys and your wallet, is it that hard to remember bags, too? Trust me, once you have done it a few times, it really does become habit.
Ah the sun is finally coming out. Plans today are to go downtown, buy some stain for the deck chairs we bought two weeks ago, play with Kona, and hopefully prepare that chicken. Bock bock bock.
Sounds like you cleaned up today!! I agree with what you say about whole chickens. It’s really the best way to go, and it’s not hard to butcher your own bird with a decent cleaver. Personally, being a bachelor, I can’t eat a whole chicken before it spoils (Unless I try hard enough!), so I just chop it up and cook as I go.
Have you ever tried to make preserves? It’s really actually quite easy. Probably the toughest part is finding canning jars, but once you get a nice stock of them, it’s easy going… but if you’re like me, I tend to give all the preserves away first 🙂
