I was considering buying a bed skirt, but we are trying not to spend on unnecessary things. Then I realized I have several very long pieces of heavy yellow fabric I could use to make my own bed skirt. I think I was going to use this for curtains at some point.
I remember seeing some DIY project where one made a bed skirt by kind of faking it and just pinning the panels just between the mattress and box spring. You save a lot of fabric that way. All I really need is to hem these panels though — a raw edge hanging down won’t look good.
Too bad I don’t know how to use my sewing machine. I think it might be broken, too. Bah.
My other idea was to visit my local crazy cheap thrift shops and see if they have any plain white or otherwise neutral, solid bed skirts. Which I would of course sterilize in the washer/dryer immediately but anyway, if they do, it might only cost a couple bucks.
Also: garage sales.
You could probably find some iron-on adhesive hemming strips to use, thereby sidestepping a need for the sewing machine.
Oh yeah! duh! Even Project Runway designers use glue…
I have put a regular flat sheet on the boxspring adn used that as a bedskirt. (I have a duvet and never use the duvet.)
yeah, the iron on stuff
You could totally use the iron on hem stuff. When I was a kid, my mom used to hem all my pants with that stuff because I was shorty mc short pants. Worked like a dream. Just have to have the iron hot enough to melt it without scorching the fabric.
You should have some kind of fabric store around there, and you can take your sewing machine in for lessons and or repair. They are only to willing to hlep you because then you can buy fabric. 🙂 Mom
