I was watching some TV this morning, after cleaning the house and doing a couple loads of laundry. On the high-def screen, there was a horse race. Kona was lying there on the couch beside me, and perked up when she noticed the image of the horses sprinting along the track.
She started growling and barking, kind of like she does when we’re watching her favorite show, “the Dog Whisperer.” She hopped off the couch and approached the TV, chattering away as she watched an isolated shot of the winning horse galloping past the rest of the field. She was so excited!
Shortly thereafter, I took her for a walk. We live in a semi-rural area. Soon we were walking past corrals and pastures. We came upon a huge pile of horse dung. She sniffed it, and before I could yank her away, she had snatched one of the balls into her mouth. I coaxed her to drop it. Ew. She seemed to think it was delicious.
On the way home, we heard the unmistakable sound of a horse whinnying. I turned down a dirt road where it was coming from. Beyond a couple fences, we saw the horse — huge, chestnut coat, calling out to its friend in the barn who had just been brought in from a ride.
“Look Kona, a horse!” I said. She stared, big black ears pointed forward. The horse continued to pace and call. Kona didn’t make a sound. I turned around and we started back to the street. She was eager to get out of there. I think she was a little scared of the animal.
Here she is earlier this morning, watching the neighbor’s three-legged cat walk around outside.
Back to housework.
