I have passed twelve weeks of gestation, so I permitted myself to set up a registry at Target Baby.
I saw a great deal of pastel pink and blue, and pastel green and yellow for “neutral.” Almost nothing in the color red, the first color that human eyes can see, and nothing in black (of course). I guess they didn’t get the memo that babies respond to bold colors, too. And that they don’t actually give a crap what color their bankie is, or if it matches the curtains. So it took a while to find anything I really liked. Finally found some red and gold bedding, and a very cuuuute beige organic cotton crib set with little jungle aminals on it. Squee! I also delighted in the fact that Target carries bumGenius cloth diapers, and plenty of organic cotton choices for blankets, washcloths, towels, etc. Target seems to have lots of basics, but not much that I personally consider cool or cute.
So on my coffee break this afternoon I stepped into Tottini, on Yale Ave. OMG the cuteness. I wandered around and kinda wanted to buy everything. Little wooden rocking horses, baby slings, Barack Obama onesies, etc etc. It’s pricier than Target, obviously, but there are a few things that are worth the expense, like eco-friendly plastic bottles. Also, observe:
I think we’ll get our crib from Craigslist. I’ve already seen some Bainbridge Island mommies selling their $500 cribs for $100 on there. The best would be one that converts into a toddler bed, but again, something we can find used pretty easily. We would just get the mattress and bedding new. YES FASCINATING.
Anyway.
It occurred to me this afternoon that so far in my pregnancy, it has been kind of all about me, physically. I can’t feel or sense the baby, so I have been experiencing it in the abstract almost…. like, I feel sick, I feel hungry all the time, I feel tired or sore, and so on. It’s been all about my body. Now that I am almost in the second trimester, I expect that very soon I will be aware that this is actually about everything that is happening to someone else.
You should check out Baby R Us, and there is a Tree Top Toys in Lake Forest Park. Both have tons of organic and bright colored stuff. I haven’t been into TTT recently but it was the place to find wooden toys. Mom
I’d like to recommend the book: http://www.windsorpeak.com/babybargains/ It lists different companies, what you really need, what you don’t need prior to the arrival of baby. I found it helpful because it is so freaking overwhelming how much stuff is out there.
Congrats on entering the 2nd trimester!
