Oh and I’ve also lost three pounds since last Friday. The only thing I have changed is my diet.

Dinner tonight turned out pretty well for two first-time recipes. I made a slow-braised pork shoulder in homemade chicken stock with sweet onions and fennel, and a red quinoa and brown rice salad with steamed carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and zucchini, with a lemon-tahini dressing. Slowly figuring out this new way of eating. It was all […]

How to still prepare most of your meals at home when you have no oven, stove, sink, or dishwasher because your kitchen is being destroyed and rebuilt. 1. Paper plates and plastic cutlery. Try to get the kind that can be recycled or composted. Make food that is held in the hand to eat, like […]

I made this today for a play date at Laura’s. It was pretty popular. There was just enough leftover to bring Brian home a small portion. This was adapted from a recipe in Cook’s Illustrated from Sept 2010. The real star is the chopped pecans in the topping, which give it a cookie-like flavor. Also […]

The sky is pure blue, birds singing, sunshine blazing, my goodness what an effect on my mood. Also our new gas range was delivered and it is beauuuuutiful. So weird to have a modern cooking appliance. It will spend the next five weeks in our garage, along with its microwave cohort.

Yes, I’ve been absent! Apologies. Keeping up is hard. The main thing occupying my time the past couple of weeks, outside of the usual hanging with the girls, is making plans to remodel our kitchen in about a month. It was actually sort of fun for me to go back and forth between Lowe’s and […]
intolerance

It has been more than two weeks since I stopped eating tomatoes. I have suspected for a pretty long time that I might have an intolerance to tomatoes. It seemed that a day after eating large amounts of tomato-based meals, my lower digestive tract would become quite… irritable. A few weeks ago I finally decided […]

I’m preparing Father’s Day dinner for Brian tonight since tomorrow night we’ll be at a cookout with my dad. So tonight, we are having slow-cooked barbecue pulled pork sandwiches, corn muffins, and homemade coleslaw. Dessert will be blackberry pie (not homemade, alas, but still pretty good). Tomorrow morning I will get up early to make […]

Dinner tonight: roasted yams and yukon gold potatoes, black beans with corn and onions, steamed rice, cheese, all rolled up into wheat tortillas. Freya will be having cheese, tortilla, yams and potatoes. She is still not a fan of beans, alas. Today was so freaking cold I wished I’d had my scarf when Freya and […]
running

Yesterday before lunch, the whole family (including Kona) went for a short (25 min.) run in our neighborhood. I am NOT a “runner” but I want to try as it’s excellent conditioning and a good way to increase heart rate the same way as with burst training. Since I am fairly out of shape, endurance-wise, […]
